For Professionals

Information for therapists, counselors, coaches, and IFS practitioners who may refer clients to the Compassionate Recovery Project.

A Supplemental Recovery Path for Deeper Inner Work

The Compassionate Recovery Project is designed to complement the work clients are already doing with therapists, counselors, coaches, IFS practitioners, recovery groups, treatment providers, sponsors, and other supports.

It is not therapy, mental health treatment, detox, residential care, or crisis support.

It is a structured recovery-focused course with optional cohort support. Participants are guided through the three layers of recovery: recovery from addiction and its impact, recovery from what addiction helped manage, and recovery of the authentic self.

For clients who are dissatisfied with recovery as only abstinence, control, or addiction management, CRP provides a path for exploring the inner patterns that often remain active after the addictive substance, behavior, or pattern has changed.

How CRP Can Support Your Work with Clients

CRP can give clients a structured way to continue recovery-focused reflection and practice between sessions, meetings, or other forms of support.

The course introduces language, practices, and Home Practices that help participants notice their lived experience more clearly, identify what addiction helped manage, develop internal compassion, and move toward a FIT Life.

CRP is designed to work alongside ongoing therapy, counseling, coaching, IFS-informed work, 12-step participation, faith-based recovery, harm reduction, and other recovery supports.

Referral partners are encouraged to continue working with clients while they participate in CRP. In many cases, ongoing professional support may help clients integrate what they are learning.

Who May Be a Good Fit

A good-fit referral is someone who has been working on addiction-related problems for one year or more and senses that recovery, as they have experienced it so far, is real but incomplete.

They may be abstinent, reducing, managing, or actively addressing an addictive substance, behavior, compulsive pattern, or another form of self-management.

They are not looking only for symptom control or relapse prevention. They are ready to explore what the addiction helped manage and begin deeper inner work.

They should also be able to participate in course material, Q&As, and cohort sessions when they are not actively under the influence of addictive substances.

Who Is Not a Good Fit

The Compassionate Recovery Project is not a fit for someone who is in acute crisis, needs detox, needs residential treatment, or needs a higher level of care.

It is not a fit for someone seeking therapy or mental health treatment from CRP.

It is not a fit for someone who cannot participate in the course, Q&As, cohorts, or coaching-style instruction without being actively under the influence of addictive substances.

It is also not a fit for someone who is unwilling to engage in self-reflection.

What Participants Receive

Participants in the Compassionate Recovery Project Online Course receive access to a 27-module course organized across 9 Recovery Movements.

The course is self-paced, with a recommended pace of about one module per week. Each module includes Home Practice to help participants integrate the teaching before continuing.

Online course participants also have access to live Q&A calls with Bill, held three times each month.

Participants who choose cohort support receive additional guided support in a Tuesday or Wednesday cohort. Both cohorts are open to all, meet three times per month for 90 minutes, and are limited to a maximum of 20 participants.
